Moroccan Wedding Traditions: The Bride’s Outfits Explained

A Moroccan wedding is one of the most spectacular celebrations in the world. It can last several days, brings together families and friends, and is famous for its music, its food — and its outfits. At the centre of it all is the bride, who may change her outfit many times during a single night.

Before the wedding: the hammam and the henna night

A few days before the wedding, the bride traditionally goes to the hammam with the women of her family. Then comes the henna night, a celebration among women where a nekkacha (henna artist) decorates the bride’s hands and feet with fine patterns. The bride often wears a green or colourful caftan or takchita for this evening, and the guests dress up too.

The negafa: the bride’s wardrobe mistress

At the wedding itself, the bride is accompanied by the negafa, a professional who dresses her, prepares her jewellery and manages every outfit change. The negafa often brings a whole wardrobe of ceremonial outfits, jewellery and crowns — although many brides also choose to have their own caftans and takchitas made.

The entrance on the amariya

One of the most emotional moments is when the bride — and sometimes the groom — is carried into the room on the amariya, a decorated palanquin, to the sound of music and joyful ululations.

The outfit changes

During the night, the bride may wear several different outfits, often called lebsa, each one representing a region or a tradition of Morocco. The exact choice depends on the family, but common outfits include:

  • The white or ivory takchita, often worn for the entrance or the cake.
  • The Fassi outfit, inspired by Fez, with rich gold embroidery and an impressive crown.
  • The northern (chamalia) outfit, with its colourful layers and large hat or headdress.
  • The Amazigh outfit, with silver jewellery and fibulas from the Berber traditions.
  • The Sahrawi outfit, inspired by the south, with a draped melhfa.
  • A modern caftan or takchita in the bride’s favourite colour.

What to wear as a wedding guest

If you are invited to a Moroccan wedding, a caftan or a takchita is the perfect choice for women — it is a real compliment to your hosts. Choose a colour you love (avoid all-white, traditionally associated with the bride), add a belt and comfortable shoes: you will dance a lot! Men often wear a djellaba, a jabador or a suit.
