Our craft

Made by hand, in the heart of Marrakech

Behind every Zakaria Couture piece there are hours of patient work by artisans who keep a centuries-old Moroccan tradition alive.

Who we are

A family boutique in the old Medina

Zakaria Couture is a boutique and atelier in Laksour, one of the oldest neighbourhoods of the Marrakech Medina, a few steps from Jemaa el-Fna. Here we design and make boléros, jackets and caftans the traditional way — and we open our doors to everyone who loves Moroccan craft, from Marrakchi brides to travellers from all over the world.

We do not sell mass-produced clothing. Every piece is cut, sewn and decorated by hand by maâlems (master artisans) we know personally, and many models are made in only a few pieces.

Savoir-faire

The hand techniques behind every caftan

01

Sfifa

A braid made from silk or rayon threads, twisted by hand and sewn along the neckline, the front opening and the sleeves. It gives the caftan its structure and its signature look.

02

Aakad

The tiny knotted buttons that close a caftan from collar to waist — sometimes more than a hundred on a single piece. Each one is knotted individually by hand.

03

Randa

A delicate needle-lace worked directly on the fabric around the neckline and cuffs, often combined with small beads or crystals.

04

Tarz

Embroidery with gold, silver or silk threads. Tarz fassi, from Fez, and tarz rbati, from Rabat, are the most famous styles — a single piece can take weeks.

05

Mdamma

The belt that completes the caftan — embroidered fabric or gold-tone filigree — and shapes the silhouette.

06

The fitting

A handmade caftan is finished on the body. We adjust sleeves, length and waist so it falls perfectly — in the boutique or to your measurements.

Why handmade matters

Slow fashion, made to last generations

  • Unique pieces. Small series, never mass-produced — you will not see your caftan everywhere.
  • Better quality. Hand-sewn braid and buttons are stronger and more beautiful than machine imitations.
  • Fair work. Buying handmade supports artisans and families of the Medina.
  • Made for you. Any model can be adapted in colour, size and length.
