Caftan vs Takchita: What Is the Difference?

If you are shopping for traditional Moroccan clothing, you will quickly hear two words: caftan and takchita. Many people use them as if they meant the same thing — even in Morocco. They are close cousins, but there is one simple difference, and knowing it will help you choose the right outfit.

The short answer

A caftan is one piece. A takchita is two (or more) pieces.

The caftan is a single long robe, usually closed at the front with aakad buttons and worn with or without a belt. The takchita is made of an under-dress called the tahtia and an over-dress called the dfina, which is often lighter, more transparent or more richly decorated, and open at the front to reveal the layer beneath. The two layers are held together at the waist by a belt.

How to recognise them

  • Look at the front: if you can see two different fabrics — for example a satin dress under an embroidered chiffon — it is a takchita.
  • Look at the volume: a takchita usually looks more layered and ceremonial.
  • Look at the belt: both can have one, but it is almost essential with a takchita, because it joins the two layers.

When to wear a caftan

The caftan is the most versatile of the two. A simple crêpe caftan with sfifa and aakad buttons is perfect for Eid, a family dinner, an engagement or a special evening during your stay in Marrakech. Lighter caftans are also comfortable enough to wear on holiday. Heavier velvet or brocade caftans become real ceremonial pieces.

When to wear a takchita

The takchita is the queen of weddings. Brides wear several during the ceremony, and it is also the favourite choice of guests who want to shine at a wedding or a henna night. Because it has two layers, it allows beautiful plays of colour and texture, and it tends to be more embroidered.

Which one should you choose?

Caftan Takchita

A tip from our atelier

If it is your first Moroccan outfit and you want something you will wear again, start with a caftan in a colour you love. If you are invited to a Moroccan wedding, go for a takchita — you will feel perfectly dressed for the occasion. And remember that both can be made to measure: our artisans can adapt any model in the colour and size of your choice.
