What to Wear in Marrakech: A Respectful Style Guide for Travellers

Courtyard of the Bahia Palace, Marrakech

Marrakech is a city of colour, light and hospitality. It is also a city where tradition matters, especially in the old Medina. Dressing thoughtfully will make you more comfortable, help you blend in, and show respect for the people who welcome you. Here is our practical guide, written from our boutique in the heart of the Medina.

Is there a dress code in Marrakech?

There is no official dress code for visitors, and Marrakech is used to travellers from all over the world. But Morocco is a Muslim country, and modest clothing is appreciated — particularly in the Medina, in the souks, in religious places and outside the big hotels. A simple rule works well: cover your shoulders and knees, and avoid very tight or transparent clothes.

What to wear in each season

Summer (June to September)

Temperatures can go above 40°C. Choose loose, long clothes in breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen: they protect you from the sun better than shorts and tank tops. A light scarf is useful against the sun and dust.

Spring and autumn

The most pleasant seasons. Days are warm and evenings can be cool, so bring a light layer for dinner on a rooftop.

Winter (December to February)

Sunny days but cold nights, sometimes close to 5°C — and riads are not always heated. Pack a warm jumper or do as the locals do: wear a djellaba.

Shoes

The streets of the Medina are narrow, sometimes uneven, and you will walk a lot. Comfortable closed shoes or sandals with good soles are essential. Keep your elegant babouches for the riad and the evenings.

Wearing traditional Moroccan clothing as a visitor

Many travellers wonder whether it is appropriate to wear a djellaba or a caftan. The answer is yes: Moroccans are generally delighted to see visitors wearing their traditional clothes, as long as they are worn with respect. And they are wonderfully practical:

  • A djellaba is loose, modest and comfortable, keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter.
  • A light caftan is perfect for dinner in a riad or a special evening.
  • Leather babouches are the most comfortable slippers you will ever own.

Our tips for shopping during your trip

Buy early in your stay: if a piece needs adjusting, or if you want a made-to-measure caftan, the artisans will have time to make it before you leave. Take your time, compare the quality of the finishing, and don’t hesitate to ask how a piece was made. Our guide on spotting authentic handmade clothing will help you.
